304 Stainless Steel Fasteners UK Guide
What is 304 Stainless Steel (A2)?
304 stainless steel, also known as A2 stainless steel, is one of the most commonly used materials across fasteners and industrial components. Known for its excellent corrosion resistance, strength and versatility, it is widely used across the UK in construction, engineering and general applications.
What is 304 stainless steel?
304 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel made from approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which is why it is often referred to as "18/8 stainless steel". It offers a strong combination of corrosion resistance, durability and ease of fabrication, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Is 304 the same as A2 stainless steel?
Yes, 304 stainless steel and A2 stainless steel are essentially the same material. A2 is the European and ISO designation, while 304 is the American AISI classification. Both refer to the same grade of stainless steel commonly used in fasteners.
Important: A2 stainless steel should not be confused with A2 tool steel or steel sheet grades, as these are completely different materials with different properties and uses.
Also known as 18/8 stainless steel due to its chromium and nickel composition.
The Difference between 304 and 316 Stainless Steel
A key comparison customers search for is 304 vs 316 stainless steel.
| Feature | 304 (A2) Stainless Steel | 316 (A4) Stainless Steel |

304 (A2) vs Other Stainless Grades
304 (A2) stainless steel is suitable for most general applications. However, for marine or highly corrosive environments, A4 (316 stainless steel) may be recommended due to its higher resistance to saltwater and chemicals.
