Find the Right Foot for Your Furniture or Chair
How to Find the Right Foot for Your Furniture or Chair
Our range of furniture and chair feet is extensive and with so many fixing styles, materials and applications available it can be daunting to know which option is right for you.
In this guide we will go through the different types of furniture feet, explain what each style is designed for and help you identify the best option for your furniture, floor surface and application.
Whether you are replacing a worn chair foot, protecting a wooden floor, levelling a table, moving heavy furniture or fitting feet to tubular furniture, the fixing method and required function are the best places to start.

What Do You Need Your Furniture Foot to Do?
Before looking at individual products, think about how the furniture is constructed and what you want the new foot to achieve. These questions will quickly narrow down the range.
How Does It Fit?
Check whether you have a hollow tube, solid wooden leg, threaded fixing, pre-drilled hole or a tube that runs parallel to the floor.
Grip or Glide?
Decide whether the furniture needs extra grip and stability or needs to move more easily across the floor.
What Floor Is It On?
Consider whether the foot will sit on carpet, wood, laminate, tile, vinyl or soft outdoor ground.
Does It Need Adjustment?
If the floor is uneven or the furniture needs additional height, an adjustable foot may be the more appropriate solution.
Grip, Protection or Movement?
The correct material and base style depends heavily on what you need the furniture to do once it is on the floor.
A foot designed to stop a chair sliding is very different from a glide designed to make the same chair easier to move.
| Requirement | Consider | Typical Options |
|---|---|---|
| More Grip | A higher-grip contact material | Rubber feet, ferrules or suitable push-in feet |
| Easier Movement | A lower-friction contact surface | PTFE glides, insert glides, sliders or castors |
| Floor Protection | A softer or non-marking contact point | Felt glides, furniture pads or suitable inserts |
| Levelling | Height adjustment beneath the furniture | One piece adjustable feet or threaded furniture glides |
| Soft Outdoor Ground | A larger base to spread the load | Anti-sink feet |
Which Furniture Feet are best for different Floors?
Hardwood & Laminate
Use non-marking furniture glides, felt pads or suitable protective furniture feet to help prevent scratches.
Carpet
Furniture glides and suitable castors can help furniture move more easily across carpeted surfaces.
Tile & Vinyl
Rubber feet and non-slip furniture feet can provide grip while helping protect the surface.
Uneven Floors
Adjustable furniture feet and levelling feet allow individual height adjustment to compensate for uneven flooring.
Which Furniture or Chair Foot Do I Need?
Use this table to narrow down the most suitable style before checking the detailed product sections below.
| Foot Type | Best For | Fitting Style | Why Choose It? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nail On Feet & Glides | Wooden chairs, tables and stools | Nail-in | Simple permanent fixing for floor protection, grip or easier movement depending on the glide |
| Screw In Furniture Feet | Chairs, tables, cabinets and furniture | Screw fixing | Secure replaceable fitting with rubber, plastic, felt and PTFE options |
| Furniture Castors | Office chairs, desks and mobile furniture | Stem, push-fit or plate depending on style | Best when the furniture needs regular controlled movement |
| Thick Base Feet | Round tubular chairs and furniture | Ribbed internal insert | Adds a thicker contact point and can raise the furniture slightly |
| Insert Glides | Hollow tubular chair and furniture legs | Push into tube | Reduces friction, noise and floor scratching while keeping the fitting discreet |
| Chair Feet | Angled round tubular chair legs | Internal ribbed insert | Provides a more suitable floor contact point for sloped chair legs |
| Sofa Feet | Sofas, settees and upholstered furniture | Threaded, screw-in or push-fit depending on style | Replacement option for worn feet or furniture refurbishment |
| Push In Feet | Furniture, equipment and appliances with compatible holes | Push-fit | Quick fitting without screws or adhesive |
| Stick On Feet & Pads | Furniture, appliances and equipment | Self adhesive | Useful where drilling, screwing or inserting a foot is not practical |
| Wide Base Feet | Heavier round tubular furniture | Ribbed internal insert | Wider base helps spread the furniture load and improve stability |
| One Piece Adjustable Feet | Tables, chairs and tubular furniture on uneven floors | Push-in insert with adjustable base | Combines a tube insert and levelling foot in one component |
| Flat Saddle Feet | Round tubes running parallel to the floor | Saddle with locating peg | Creates a flat contact point beneath horizontal or curved tubular furniture |
| Angled Saddle Feet | Angled tubular chairs and furniture | Screw or peg depending on style | Designed to support tubular applications where the contact angle is not flat |
| Clip On Saddle Feet | Cantilever chairs and continuous round tube frames | Clip-on with optional locating peg | Fits onto the side of the tube rather than into an open tube end |
| Standoff Feet | Square or rectangular tubes running parallel to the floor | Internal insert with fixing hole | Raises box-section furniture and creates a defined floor contact point |
| Threaded Furniture Glides | Furniture with an existing female thread | Threaded | Low-friction glide with a secure threaded connection |
| Anti-Sink Feet | Camping chairs and outdoor furniture on soft ground | Compatible chair or furniture fitting | Large base spreads load to help prevent sinking into mud or soft ground |
| Furniture Sliders | Sofas, tables, cabinets and heavy furniture | Position beneath furniture contact points | Reduces friction when furniture needs to be moved |
| Walking Stick Ferrules | Walking sticks, canes and compatible tubular applications | Push over tube end | High-grip rubber contact point for indoor and outdoor surfaces |
| Crutch Feet | Crutches, walking sticks and selected heavy-duty tubular uses | Push-fit ferrule | Wide reinforced rubber base designed for grip and stability |
Types of Furniture Feet & Chair Feet Explained
Once you have narrowed down the fixing style and function, use the detailed sections below to compare each product family. Each section includes a quick question to help confirm whether that foot is likely to suit your application.
Nail On Feet & Glides
Nail On Feet & Glides are a strong choice for wooden chairs, stools, tables and other furniture where a nail fixing can be driven directly into the leg. They provide a secure contact point beneath the furniture and can be selected for either increased floor protection or smoother movement.
Best suited to: Solid wooden furniture legs where a permanent nail-in fitting is suitable.
For installations where a nail fixing isn't suitable, consider our Screw In Furniture Feet, Push In Feet or Stick On Feet & Pads.
View Nail On Feet & Glides →Screw In Furniture Feet
Screw In Furniture Feet provide a secure mechanical fixing for chairs, tables, sofas, cabinets and other furniture. The range includes different contact materials so the foot can be chosen for grip, floor protection or lower-friction movement.
Best suited to: Furniture where a screw can be securely fixed into the underside of the leg or frame.
If a screw fixing isn't suitable, compare our Nail On Feet & Glides, Push In Feet or Stick On Feet & Pads.
View Screw In Furniture Feet →Office Chair & Furniture Castors
Furniture Castors are the option to consider when the furniture needs to roll rather than remain stationary. They are commonly used with office chairs, desks, cabinets and other furniture that is moved regularly.
Best suited to: Applications where mobility is a primary requirement.
View Furniture Castors →Thick Base Feet
Thick Base Feet push inside round tubular furniture legs and provide a substantial base beneath the tube. They are particularly useful when a standard thin insert does not provide enough base height.
Best suited to: Round hollow chair or furniture legs where additional base height and a secure ribbed insert are required.
Insert Glides
Insert Glides fit inside hollow tubular furniture legs to create a discreet finished contact point. They are particularly useful for reducing friction, protecting floors and reducing scraping noise when chairs or tables are moved.
Best suited to: Hollow tubular chairs, desks and tables where smoother movement is required.
Chair Feet for Tubes
These Chair Feet are designed for round tubular legs that meet the floor at an angle. The shaped base creates a more suitable floor contact point than a standard flat insert and is particularly useful for classroom, office and canteen seating.
Best suited to: Chairs with hollow round legs positioned at an angle.
Sofa Feet
Sofa Feet are intended for repairing, refurbishing or manufacturing sofas, settees and compatible upholstered furniture. Different fixing methods and heights allow an existing damaged foot to be replaced or the furniture to be updated.
Best suited to: Sofas, settees, armchairs and upholstered furniture requiring replacement feet.
Depending on the furniture construction and required base style, you may also want to compare Wide Base Feet or Screw In Furniture Feet.
Push In Feet
Push In Feet fit directly into a compatible hole in furniture, appliances or equipment. They provide a simple way to add a protective contact point without using screws or adhesive.
Best suited to: Applications that already have a suitable mounting hole or where a push-fit fixing can be incorporated.
For tubular furniture and related push-fit applications, you can also compare our Tube Inserts, Chair Feet and Insert Glides.
Stick On Feet & Pads
Stick On Feet & Pads use a self adhesive backing and are useful when a mechanical fixing is unnecessary or unsuitable. Depending on the material, they can increase grip, protect surfaces or help an item move more easily.
Best suited to: Furniture, electronics, appliances and equipment with a clean flat mounting surface.
Wide Base Feet
Wide Base Feet are internal inserts for round tubular furniture legs with a larger footprint beneath the tube. The wider base helps distribute the furniture load and can improve the stability of heavier chairs or furniture.
Best suited to: Round tubular furniture where a larger supporting base is preferred.
One Piece Adjustable Feet
One Piece Adjustable Feet combine a tubular insert and adjustable lower foot in a single component. The ribbed insert fits inside a compatible round or square tube while the base can be adjusted to compensate for uneven flooring.
Best suited to: Tables, chairs and tubular frames that need simple height or levelling adjustment.
Does the Tube Run Along the Floor?
Standard inserts work at an open tube end. If your chair, table or frame uses a curved tube or a tube that runs parallel to the floor, a saddle or standoff style is usually the more relevant type to investigate.
Flat Saddle Feet
Flat Saddle Feet sit beneath round tubing that runs parallel to the floor. They create a flatter supporting surface between the tube and flooring and use a locating peg to help keep the foot in position.
Best suited to: Curved or horizontal round tube sections on chairs, desks and tables.
Angled Saddle Feet
Angled Saddle Feet are designed for tubular furniture where the tube approaches the floor at an angle. Different styles are available with screw or peg fittings and a choice of base constructions.
Best suited to: Tubular chairs, furniture and appliances where the supporting tube is angled.
Clip On Saddle Feet
Clip On Saddle Feet attach around the outside of round tubing rather than fitting into an open end. This makes them particularly useful for cantilever chairs, folding tables and furniture made from continuous curved tubing.
Best suited to: Round tubular frames where the tube itself contacts the floor.
Standoff Feet
Standoff Feet are designed for square or rectangular box section that runs parallel to the floor. They fit into the tubing and create a raised contact point beneath furniture such as tables and chairs.
Best suited to: Square and rectangular tubular frames rather than round tubes.
Threaded Furniture Glides
Threaded Furniture Glides screw into a compatible female thread beneath the furniture. PTFE contact surfaces are particularly useful where reducing friction and making furniture easier to move is the main objective.
Best suited to: Furniture legs or frames that already include a suitable threaded fixing.
Furniture Sliders
Furniture Sliders reduce friction beneath furniture so heavier objects can be repositioned more easily. They are useful beneath sofas, chairs, tables, cabinets and other furniture during cleaning, decorating or room rearrangement.
Best suited to: Furniture that needs occasional easier movement rather than permanent castor-style mobility.
How to Measure for Furniture & Chair Feet
Choosing the correct style is only the first part of the process. You also need to check the relevant dimensions so the foot fits the furniture correctly.
Tube Diameter
For tubular furniture, measure the outside diameter or outside dimensions of the leg.
Wall Thickness
Internal inserts may also require the tube wall thickness to determine how much internal space is available.
Fixing Size
For threaded, push-in or screw-fixed products, check the thread or mounting-hole dimensions.
Required Height
Check the base height or adjustment range if the new foot must match existing furniture height.
