Thread Forming Screws

Thread Forming Screws, also commonly known as Thread Rolling Screws, are designed to create a strong, secure internal thread as they are driven into a pre-drilled or pre-formed hole. Rather than cutting and removing material like a traditional self-tapping screw, thread forming screws displace and reform the surrounding material to produce a mating thread.

This cold-forming action can provide excellent resistance to loosening, strong thread engagement and reliable fastening performance, while also reducing the risk of loose swarf or chips being generated during installation.

How Do Thread Forming Screws Work?

Thread forming screws use a specially designed thread profile to progressively form a corresponding internal thread within the mating material. As the screw is installed, material is displaced around the thread rather than removed.

This makes them particularly suitable for applications where cleanliness, repeatability and secure fastening are important. Depending on the screw design and application, thread forming screws can be used with metals, plastics and other suitable engineering materials.

Thread Forming Screws and Taptite Screws

Thread forming screws operate on a similar principle to Taptite® screws, which are widely recognised for their thread rolling and thread forming characteristics. Both fastening types are designed to form a strong internal thread during installation rather than relying on a pre-tapped hole.

Taptite-style screws typically use a specialised lobular or trilobular geometry that reduces installation torque while helping to provide strong resistance to vibration and loosening. Thread forming screws can offer similar installation and performance benefits, although the exact thread geometry and specification can vary depending on the individual product range.

Benefits of Thread Forming Screws

  • Form their own mating thread during installation

  • Also commonly referred to as thread rolling screws

  • Similar operating principle and performance characteristics to Taptite screws

  • Can eliminate the need for a separate tapping operation

  • Produce little or no cutting swarf compared with thread cutting screws

  • Provide strong thread engagement

  • Good resistance to vibration and loosening

  • Suitable for automated and high-volume assembly

  • Available in a range of thread sizes, lengths, head styles and materials

Common Applications

Thread forming screws are widely used throughout automotive manufacturing, electrical equipment, sheet metal fabrication, machinery, appliances, enclosures and general industrial assembly. Their ability to create a secure reusable thread while reducing secondary machining operations makes them particularly useful for efficient production environments.
