How to Choose the Right Fastener GUIDE
How to Choose the Right Fastener
With such a large range of fasteners, nuts and bolts, screws, washers and specialist fixings available, finding the correct fastener for your application can feel daunting.
Different screws and bolts are designed for different applications. Head style, thread size, drive type, material, fixing method and the environment in which the fastener will be used can all affect which option is most suitable.
This guide is designed to make choosing fasteners and fixings easier. Start with what you need the fastener to do then use our Fastener Finder, comparison tables and product links to narrow down the right Vital Parts range.
Finding the Correct Fasteners and Fixings Does Not Need to Be Complicated
Our bolts and screws range covers everything from conventional machine fasteners through to specialist security fasteners, construction fasteners, self-drilling screws, plastic fixings, lifting fasteners and production fixings.
Alongside our screws and bolts we stock extensive ranges of nuts and washers to help create complete nuts and bolts assemblies.
Instead of trying to recognise every type of fastener, begin by identifying the material you are fastening, how the connection needs to work and what you need from the finished joint. This makes it much easier to narrow down the correct bolt and nut, screw fixing or specialist fastener.
Start with the application, not the product name. If you know what material you are fixing, whether the fixing should be permanent or removable and whether the head must sit flush, you can quickly reduce the number of suitable fasteners.

Fastener Selection Guide
Where Should You Start When Choosing a Fastener?
Before worrying about DIN standards, screw fixings or exact product names, answer four simple questions about the application.
What Are You Fixing Into?
Consider whether the substrate is metal, timber, plastic, thin sheet or an existing threaded component.
How Should It Be Installed?
Will you use a bolt and nut, existing internal thread, self-tapping screw, weld or press-fit fastening?
What Should the Head Do?
Decide whether the screw or bolt can protrude, needs to sit flush, requires high torque or needs to resist tampering.
What Environment Is It In?
Think about corrosion, moisture, vibration, temperature, electrical requirements and expected loading.
The Main Parts of a Fastening Assembly
Many fastening systems use a combination of screws and bolts, nuts and washers. The exact combination will depend on the application, load, material and installation method.

Bolts & Screws
The main threaded fasteners used to clamp, join or secure components across machinery, manufacturing, engineering and construction applications.
Our range includes common machine fasteners alongside specialist screw fixings, security fasteners, self-tapping screws and other industrial fasteners.
Browse Bolts & Screws →

Open the option below that most closely describes your application. Each section will narrow down the choice of fasteners, bolts, nuts and screw fixings to the Vital Parts ranges most likely to suit your requirement.
You Do Not Need to Know the Fastener Name
Choose the description that matches the job. You can compare the suggested fixings and fasteners before selecting the exact size, material and standard.
01 I need screw fixings for metal, timber or plastic
If you do not want to use a separate bolt and nut, look at screw fixings specifically designed to engage directly with the material.
Self Tapping Screws
A good starting point for suitable sheet material and applications where the screw forms or cuts its mating thread during installation.
Self Drilling Screws
Useful where drilling and fastening need to be combined into a single installation stage in compatible materials.
Wood Screws
Designed specifically for timber, furniture, joinery and other wood-based applications.
Screws for Plastic
Specialist thread-forming screws designed for suitable plastic components.
02 I need general engineering, machinery or construction fasteners
For machinery, fabrication, brackets, equipment and general construction fasteners, start with one of the conventional machine-fastener families below.
Hex Head Screws & Bolts
External hexagonal head for tightening with a spanner or socket.
Cap Screws
Socket-driven fasteners used widely across engineering and machinery.
Pan Head Machine Screws
Rounded-head machine screw fixings for general assembly and component fastening.
Cheese Head Slotted Screws

Truss Head Screws
Wide low-profile heads for spreading force over a larger contact area.
03 I need the fastener to sit flush or reduce protrusion
Start With Countersunk or Headless Fasteners
Where snagging, appearance or clearance is important, consider screws and bolts designed to minimise the amount of material protruding above the finished surface.
Countersunk Screws
Designed to sit level with a correctly prepared countersunk surface.
Grub Screws
Headless screw fixings commonly used for securing components onto shafts or within threaded holes.

04 I need security fasteners to prevent unauthorised removal
Security Fasteners
Specialist drive styles and security fixings for applications where access or removal needs to be restricted.
Security Nuts
Security-focused nuts for exposed, public or higher-risk fastener applications.
05 I need frequent adjustment or access without conventional tools
Knurled Fasteners
Textured fasteners designed to improve hand grip during repeated adjustment.
Wing Nuts
Useful where a nut needs to be regularly tightened or loosened by hand.
Captive Screws
Designed to remain retained in a panel or component when released.
06 I need permanent manufacturing or construction fasteners
Weld Studs
Create welded attachment points in suitable metal assemblies.
Weld Nuts
Create a permanent female threaded fixing on suitable fabricated components.
Self Clinching Fasteners
Press-installed threaded fasteners for suitable sheet materials.
07 I need a specialist fastener for movement, lifting or another specific job
Shoulder Bolts
Precision bolts with a smooth shoulder for pivoting, spacing or guided movement.
Threaded Rod
Continuous thread for framework, suspension, mounting and adjustable assemblies.
Lifting Fasteners
Specialist eye bolts, eye nuts and threaded lifting fasteners.
Nylon Screws & Bolts
Non-metallic fasteners for suitable lightweight, corrosion-sensitive or electrically insulating applications.
Number Plate Screws
Dedicated screw fixings for vehicle number plate installation.
Where Are Industrial Fasteners Used?
Metal fasteners are used throughout manufacturing, construction, machinery, furniture, transport and specialist engineering. Choosing the correct fastener screw types depends on how the joint will be assembled and the conditions it will experience.
Industrial Fasteners
Screws and fasteners are widely used in machinery, production equipment, conveyors, fabricated assemblies and general industrial maintenance.
Construction Fasteners
Construction applications can use bolts, nuts, washers, threaded rod and specialist fixings for structural, equipment and installation requirements.
Furniture Fixings & Fasteners
T-nuts, barrel nuts, cross dowels, insert nuts and other furniture fixings provide strong threaded joints in timber and furniture assemblies.
Aerospace Fasteners & Components
Aerospace applications can require fasteners and washers selected for specific strength, vibration, temperature and material requirements. Always confirm the required specification and certification for the application before ordering.
Metal Fasteners
Stainless steel, high tensile steel and other metal fasteners are used where strength, durability and reliable threaded connections are required.

Already Know the Bolt or Thread Size?
If you already know the approximate metric thread size required, you can bypass some of the fastener selection process and browse our bolts by size.
Which Screw or Bolt Fastener Should You Choose?
Screw and bolt head style, drive type and installation method can help narrow down the correct fastener family.
| Fastener Type | Useful When | Browse |
|---|---|---|
| Hex Head | External spanner or socket access is available and strong conventional tightening is required. | Hex Head Screws & Bolts |
| Cap Head | You need an internal-drive machine fastener suitable for engineering and machinery. | Cap Screws |
| Countersunk | The screw needs to finish flush with a correctly prepared surface. | Countersunk Screws |
| Pan Head | A conventional rounded machine screw fixing is suitable. | Pan Head Machine Screws |
| Cheese Head | A traditional cylindrical slotted machine screw is required. | Cheese Head Slotted Screws |
| Truss Head | A broad bearing surface and relatively low profile are useful. | Truss Head Screws |
| Headless | The fastener needs to sit within the threaded component or secure something onto a shaft. | Grub Screws |
| Security | Conventional tools should not provide easy removal. | Security Fasteners |
Which Nut Do You Need for Your Bolt?
Choosing the correct nut is just as important as selecting the bolt. Nut choice can affect vibration resistance, load distribution, appearance, installation method and how easily a nuts and bolts joint can be adjusted.
| Requirement | Suggested Nut Type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General bolt and nut joint | Standard Hex Nuts | The conventional starting point for a wide range of threaded nuts and bolts assemblies. |
| Resistance to loosening | Locking Hex Nuts | Designed to provide additional resistance to unwanted loosening. |
| Wider bearing surface | Flanged Hex Nuts | An integrated flange spreads clamping force over a larger area. |
| Cover the exposed thread | Domed Nuts | The enclosed top covers the exposed threaded end. |
| Hand adjustment | Wing Nuts | Winged sides allow the nut to be tightened and loosened manually. |
| Positive mechanical retention | Castle Nuts | Slotted construction allows use with a suitable retaining arrangement. |
| Prevent tampering | Security Nuts | Designed for installations where conventional removal should be restricted. |
| Permanent fabricated connection | Weld Nuts | Creates a permanent female thread within a suitable welded assembly. |
Need Specialist Nut Fixings for Panels, Furniture or Inserts?
When Should You Add a Washer to Nuts and Bolts?
A washer may look simple, but choosing the correct style can improve how a bolt and nut assembly performs.
Depending on its design and material, a washer may distribute clamping load, protect a finished surface, act as a spacer, provide insulation or contribute to sealing and movement control.
The washer internal diameter should be compatible with the screw or bolt thread while the outside diameter should provide sufficient bearing area for the application.

Choosing Materials for Fasteners, Bolts and Nuts
Once you have identified the correct fastener style, select a material that matches the strength, environment and application requirements.
Stainless Steel Fasteners
Stainless steel fasteners, bolts, nuts and washers are commonly chosen where corrosion resistance, durability and a clean finish are important.
A2 stainless steel is widely used for general applications while Marine Grade A4 Stainless Steel is typically considered for more corrosive, coastal or marine environments.
High Tensile & Carbon Steel
Carbon steel and higher tensile grades are often selected where mechanical strength and loading requirements are the priority.
Always check the required grade, coating and environmental conditions before choosing the final fastener.
Nylon Fasteners
Nylon screws and bolts provide a lightweight non-metallic alternative for suitable applications where properties such as electrical insulation or corrosion resistance may be useful.
Check the Complete Bolt and Nut Assembly
Do not choose the screw or bolt in isolation. Consider the nut, washer, mating thread, substrate and environmental exposure as part of the complete fastening system.
