Grub Screws

The term grub screw is used to describe a type of compact threaded fastener that is commonly made from stainless steel. They are known as a unique fastening solution that is able to exert a clamping force without the use of a traditional nut. Another key feature of a grub screw is that it is designed to sit flush to the surface that is being fastened, this means that no screw or bolt head will protrude. This can be vital for some applications and also provides a sleek aesthetic finish.

Stainless grub screws are typically differentiated by the shape of the drive that is present on the head of the screw. The most common variety is the hex socket grub screw, this can be tightened using a hex key or Allen key. We also sell a slotted grub screws, also known as flat head grub screws. These are designed to be tightened using a flat-blade screwdriver.

Stainless steel grub screws are named after their shape, which loosely resembles that of a grub insect. While this has become the most commonly used term to describe them in the UK markets, they are also often called stainless steel set screws. Additionally, like most products in the fastener category, their DIN standard numbers are used to refer to grub screws. In the case of our product offering, these would be din 913 and din914. The drive or recess that is present on the head of the grub screw can be another way for customers to explain their requirements, with Allen key grub screws being another popular search term.

One potential disadvantage of using grub screws is that once they have been fully installed into an application they can be difficult to remove. Although stainless steel offers an excellent combination of strength, durability and corrosion resistance, a disadvantage can be found in the increased cost of this premium material. Stainless steel will also conduct electricity, though to a lesser extent than metals such as copper and aluminium, this could be undesirable in some electrical applications. Finally, stainless steel is not as strong as alloy steel and stainless steel grub screws may provide insufficient torque and clamping force if used in high-torque applications.

Stainless grub screws are primarily used in applications where space is restrained. These are often scenarios where it isn't possible to use a standard bolt or screw due the protrusion of its head. In contrast to this, the stainless steel grub screw will provide a flush finish to the application's surface. For this reason, they are also the preferred fastening solution for any applications involving rotation. This is due to grub screws having no protrusions that could catch against objects as the application rotates. Some specific examples of common applications that require set screws include the assembly of door handles and the installation of knobs and levers. You may see grub screws being used in various automotive components and fastening transmissions, engines and suspension systems together in a car. Stainless steel grub screws are also a common choice for the installation of furniture and cabinetry. They are favoured for their ability to secure handles, knobs and decorative elements in an aesthetically pleasing manner, without exposed bolt or screw heads.
