E-Clips DIN 6799

E Clips which are also known as E Rings are another type of retaining ring we offer. With a unique shape, like the other type of retaining clips they fit onto shafts to retain components from moving, but are made for specific groove types.

Our E-Clips are available in A1 (Equivalent to 303) and A4 (Equivalent to 316 Marine Grade) Stainless Steel in sizes 1.2mm to 24mm. For our full selection of sizes and materials see the product table displayed below, or get in touch with a member of our staff.

We also offer Internal Circlips and External Circlips.

How do E-clips work?

E-clips are external retaining rings that snap into a machined groove on a shaft or pin. Once seated in the groove the three prongs of the clip bear against the shaft and the shoulder of the component to prevent axial movement. This creates a quick mechanical stop that can be removed and refitted for maintenance without damaging the shaft or the clip.

How to install an E-clip

1. Confirm the shaft diameter and the correct DIN 6799 size of clip.
2. Ensure a clean groove with no burrs then lightly oil if required.
3. Position the open side of the E-clip over the groove with the centre tang aligned to the groove.
4. Using E-clip pliers or a flat bladed screwdriver press the clip squarely until it snaps into the groove.
5. Check that the clip is fully seated all round and cannot rotate out of the groove under light finger pressure.

Safety tips: wear eye protection, hold the clip securely during e clipping installation and shield the work area to prevent the clip springing away.

How are E-clips measured?

E-clips to DIN 6799 are sized by the nominal shaft diameter they fit. The size code equals the shaft diameter in millimetres, for example a DIN 6799 6 fits a 6 mm shaft. The shaft groove is machined to the DIN 6799 dimensions so the clip thickness and free diameter are predefined by the standard. When selecting a clip measure the shaft diameter not the outside of the clip and ensure your groove width and depth match the DIN 6799 table for that shaft size.
