What is a penny washer used for?

Penny washers, also referred to as repair washers, are washers with a larger diameter than standard flat washers. Their key function is to distribute the clamping force exerted by a bolt or nut over a wider surface area. This serves several purposes:

  • Prevents damage to the material: By distributing the load, penny washers help prevent the bolt or nut head from digging into or pulling through the material, particularly in softer materials like wood or plastic.
  • Creates a tighter seal: The increased surface area can also help create a more secure connection, which can be beneficial in applications where water resistance or weatherproofing is important.
  • Provides a more finished look: Penny washers can add a neater, more polished look to a fastened joint.

Are stainless steel penny washers rustproof?

While stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to regular steel, it's not entirely rustproof. There are different grades of stainless steel, and the level of corrosion resistance can vary depending on the grade. Marine grade A4 stainless steel (grade 316) offers the best corrosion resistance. It is ideal for outdoor applications or environments where exposure to salt water or other harsh chemicals is likely.

Vital Parts offers high-quality stainless steel penny washers that are perfect for a variety of applications. For the best possible corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments, consider opting for our marine grade A4 (316) stainless steel penny washers.

What are the benefits of using stainless steel penny washers?

Stainless steel penny washers offer several advantages over regular steel washers:

  • Superior corrosion resistance: As mentioned earlier, stainless steel is much more resistant to rust and corrosion than regular steel. This makes them ideal for outdoor use or in damp environments.
  • Increased strength and durability: Stainless steel is generally stronger than regular steel, so the washers can withstand higher loads.
  • Long-lasting performance: Due to their corrosion resistance and strength, stainless steel penny washers will last longer than regular steel washers, reducing the need for replacements.

By using stainless steel penny washers in your projects, you can ensure a strong, durable and long-lasting connection, especially in outdoor or demanding environments.
