Retaining Pins

Our Retaining Pins are available in a variety of durable materials to suit diverse application environments. Choose from cost-effective BZP (Bright Zinc Plated) Steel for general use, offering good corrosion resistance. For more demanding conditions requiring superior protection against rust and chemical exposure, opt for our A2 Stainless Steel or the even more robust A4 Stainless Steel (Marine Grade).

Ensure the integrity and safety of your machinery and equipment with our comprehensive range of Retaining Pins. Also commonly known as R-Clips, Hairpin Cotter Pins, or Spring Cotters, these versatile fasteners provide a simple yet highly effective method for securing shafts, axles, and other components, preventing unwanted movement or slippage. Their unique design with a spring action allows for quick and easy installation while providing a reliable hold.

Where are Retaining Pins used?

Retaining Pins are indispensable across numerous industries and applications, including:

  • Automotive: Securing wheel hubs, brake components, linkages, and trailer hitches.
  • Agriculture: Fastening parts on tractors, ploughs, mowers, and other farm machinery.
  • Construction: Securing scaffolding pins, formwork ties, and various equipment attachments.
  • Marine: Used in boat fittings, outboard motors, and other marine equipment where corrosion resistance is crucial (A4 Stainless Steel is ideal here).
  • Lawn & Garden: Securing wheels, handles, and attachments on lawnmowers, trailers, and other garden equipment.
  • DIY & General Engineering: Countless uses in securing pins, shafts, and clevises in various projects and repairs.

Helpful Installation Tips:

  • Select the Correct Size: Choose a retaining pin with a leg length and wire diameter appropriate for the diameter of the shaft and the required holding force. The pin should fit snugly but not require excessive force to insert.
  • Align the Holes: Ensure the holes in the shaft or component are properly aligned before attempting to insert the retaining pin.
  • Insert Straight: Push the straight legs of the retaining pin through the aligned holes.
  • Spread the Legs: Once the pin is fully inserted, spread the legs apart to the side. This creates a secure hold and prevents the pin from accidentally falling out due to vibration or movement. Ensure the legs are spread sufficiently to engage with the surrounding material.
  • Consider Reusability: Retaining pins are generally designed for repeated use. To remove, simply straighten the legs and pull the pin out. However, inspect pins for any signs of damage or deformation before reusing.

What is the difference between UK and Euro style Retaining Pins?

Before diving into the styles, remember that all R-Clips (Retaining Pins, Hairpin Cotters, Spring Cotters) rely on a springy wire form designed to be inserted through a hole and then have its legs spread to provide secure retention. The differences lie primarily in the shape and configuration of these legs and the loop section.

1. UK Style Retaining Pins:

  • Appearance: Typically features a single, relatively tight coil at the head (the loop end you grip for insertion/removal). The legs extending from this coil are usually straight or have a slight curve towards the end. One leg is often slightly longer or has a more pronounced bend to aid initial insertion.
  • Characteristics:
    • Compact Head: The single, tight coil keeps the head profile relatively small.
    • Positive Retention: The spring action of the wire and the spreading of the legs provide a secure hold.
    • Ease of Insertion: The slightly longer or bent leg helps guide the pin through the holes.
    • Common Use: A very common and general-purpose R-Clip style found in a wide variety of applications across the UK and beyond.

2. Euro Style Retaining Pins:

  • Appearance: Characterized by a wider, more open loop or "bow" at the head, often with a more gradual curve in the legs extending from it. The legs might have a more pronounced outward flare towards their ends compared to the UK style.
  • Characteristics:
    • Wider Grip: The more open loop can offer a slightly easier grip for insertion and removal, especially with gloved hands.
    • Potentially Easier Spreading: The more flared legs might make them slightly easier to spread fully after insertion.
    • Similar Retention: Provides comparable secure retention to the UK style through the spring action and spread legs.
    • Regional Preference: As the name suggests, this style is more commonly encountered in European applications and standards.

3. Double Coil Style Retaining Pins:

  • Appearance: The most distinctive feature is the presence of two complete coils at the head of the clip before the legs extend. These coils are typically wound tightly together. The legs themselves can vary in their straightness or flare, similar to the UK or Euro styles.
  • Characteristics:
    • Increased Spring Force: The double coil design generally provides a stronger spring force compared to single-coil UK or the more open Euro styles. This can lead to a more positive and tighter grip within the retaining holes.
    • Enhanced Vibration Resistance: The increased spring force can offer better resistance to loosening due to vibration in demanding applications.
    • Potentially More Secure: The extra coil can contribute to a slightly more secure hold, making it less likely to be accidentally dislodged.
    • Applications: Often favored in applications where higher vibration levels or more demanding retention are expected, such as in certain types of machinery, agricultural equipment, or heavy-duty assemblies.

In Summary:

  • UK Style: Common, general-purpose, compact head.
  • Euro Style: Wider, more open head loop, potentially easier grip and leg spreading.
  • Double Coil Style: Two coils at the head for increased spring force and enhanced vibration resistance, offering a more secure hold.

We also have Split Pins (DIN 94) and Safety Retaining Pins for a more permanent fixture. For more Heavy Duty applications we also have 3 ranges of Detent Pins.

When selecting an R-Clip style, consider the specific application requirements, including the level of vibration, the ease of access for installation and removal, and the desired level of retention force. While all three styles serve the same fundamental purpose, their subtle design differences can make one more suitable than another in certain situations. Remember to always choose the correct size and material for your specific needs.
