Nord-Lock® Washers

Nord-Lock® Washers are premium anti-vibration washers designed to secure bolted joints exposed to vibration, dynamic loading and repeated movement. Unlike conventional locking washers that rely primarily on friction, Nord-Lock® wedge-locking washers use tension and cam geometry to prevent nuts and bolts from rotating loose. This makes them a reliable solution for safety-critical assemblies where maintaining clamping force is essential.

Our range of original Nord-Lock® Washers is stocked in Delta Protekt® Coated Hardened Steel and A4 Stainless Steel, providing suitable options for general engineering, machinery, construction and corrosion-prone environments. They can be installed using standard tools and are suitable for use beneath either the bolt head or nut.

How Do Nord-Lock® Washers Work?

Each Nord-Lock® locking system consists of a matched pair of washers with cams on the inner faces and radial serrations on the outer faces. During installation, the serrations grip the mating surfaces while the cams face one another inside the washer pair.

The angle of the cams is greater than the thread pitch of the fastener. If vibration or movement attempts to rotate the bolt or nut loose, the cam faces are forced to rise against one another. This creates a wedge-locking effect that increases tension within the joint and prevents further rotation. The bolted connection therefore remains secure even when exposed to severe vibration and dynamic loads.

Material Options

  • Delta Protekt® Hardened Steel: Through-hardened steel washers with a corrosion-resistant Delta Protekt® coating, suitable for general steel assemblies, industrial machinery and high-strength bolts.
  • A4 Stainless Steel: Surface-hardened stainless steel washers offering excellent resistance to corrosion, making them suitable for stainless steel assemblies, outdoor equipment, marine environments and demanding industrial applications.

Benefits of Nord-Lock® Anti-Vibration Washers

  • Prevent nuts and bolts from rotating loose under vibration
  • Secure joints using tension rather than increased thread friction
  • Help maintain a controlled and reliable bolt preload
  • Suitable for dynamic and safety-critical bolted connections
  • Quick to install and remove using standard assembly tools
  • Reusable when inspected and confirmed to be in suitable condition
  • Locking performance is not negatively affected by lubrication

Common Applications

Nord-Lock® anti-vibration washers are widely used across industrial machinery, manufacturing equipment, rail systems, automotive assemblies, renewable energy installations, construction equipment, material handling systems, pumps and heavy engineering. They are particularly valuable in applications where loose fasteners could lead to equipment damage, unplanned downtime or safety risks.
