Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts

Our Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts are designed to restore damaged or stripped internal threads and create strong, reliable threaded connections in a wide range of materials. Manufactured from high-quality austenitic stainless steel wire, these inserts provide a durable, wear-resistant internal thread that can offer greater strength and longevity than threads formed directly in the parent material.

Ideal for thread repair, reinforcement and maintenance applications, Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts are commonly used in automotive, aerospace, engineering and industrial assemblies. Their precision-engineered design provides a secure internal thread while helping to maintain bolt tension, even in applications exposed to vibration, repeated fastening and demanding operating conditions.

What are Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts?

Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts, also known as Wire Thread Inserts or Threaded Coil Inserts, are helical stainless steel coils designed to be installed into a specially tapped hole. Once fitted, they create a durable internal thread suitable for use with standard metric fasteners.

These inserts are particularly useful when repairing stripped threads or strengthening threaded connections in softer materials such as aluminium and other lightweight alloys. Their resilient coil construction distributes loads across the engaged threads, helping to reduce wear and minimise the risk of thread failure.

Technical Specifications:

  • Material: Austenitic Stainless Steel Wire

  • Insert Type: Helical Wire Thread Insert

  • Thread Type: Metric

  • Temperature Resistance: -200°C to +425°C

  • Applications: Internal Thread Repair and Reinforcement

  • Installation: Requires a correctly sized drilled and specially tapped hole

Understanding Helicoil Insert Length and Measurements

Due to their helical construction, wire thread inserts cannot be accurately measured in their uninstalled condition. The coils change diameter and spacing during installation, meaning their dimensions in the free state do not represent their final fitted dimensions.

Once correctly installed, an insert with a nominal fitted length of 3mm will have an effective length approximately 0.25mm shorter, allowing for the half-pitch adjustment required for correct thread engagement when using a 0.5mm thread pitch.

For accurate identification before installation, the recommended method is to count the number of coils rather than measure the insert's overall length. For example, an M3 x 0.5 x 1D Helicoil Thread Repair Insert should typically contain between 3.4 and 4.3 coils.

Applications:

Helicoil Thread Repair Inserts are commonly used for:

  • Repairing damaged, worn or stripped internal threads.

  • Strengthening threaded holes in aluminium, magnesium and other softer materials.

  • Automotive engine components, gearboxes and mechanical assemblies.

  • Aerospace and precision engineering applications.

  • Machinery maintenance and equipment refurbishment.

  • Applications requiring repeated assembly and disassembly.

  • Threaded connections exposed to vibration, wear and demanding temperatures.

Benefits:

  • High Thread Strength: Creates a robust internal thread that can exceed the strength of the surrounding parent material.

  • Vibration Resistance: Helps maintain fastener preload and reduces the likelihood of loosening in high-vibration environments.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Austenitic stainless steel construction provides excellent resistance to corrosion and helps reduce the risk of seizing and galling.

  • Wear Resistance: Protects internal threads against deterioration caused by friction and repeated fastening.

  • Lightweight Construction: Delivers excellent thread strength without significantly increasing assembly weight.

  • Wide Operating Temperature Range: Suitable for applications operating between -200°C and +425°C.

  • Cost-Effective Repairs: Allows damaged threaded components to be restored without requiring complete replacement.
