Imperial Threads Explained | UNC & UNF Thread Guide
Unified Threads Explained: What Are Imperial Thread Standards?
Unified threads, also known as imperial threads, are a standardised thread system widely used in the United States, Canada and other regions. Unlike metric threads, unified threads are measured in inches and follow specific standards such as UNC and UNF. Understanding these thread types is essential when selecting compatible fasteners for machinery, automotive or imported equipment.
What are unified threads?
Unified threads are a standardised screw thread system defined by the Unified Thread Standard (UTS). They are primarily used in imperial measurement systems and are based on inch dimensions rather than millimetres.
These threads are commonly found on fasteners used in American-manufactured equipment, automotive components and imported machinery where imperial sizing is required.
Unified threads are identified by their diameter in inches and threads per inch (TPI), rather than pitch as used in metric systems.
Unified threads use inch-based measurements and are commonly found on US and imported machinery and fasteners.
Types of Unified Threads
UNC (Unified National Coarse)
UNC threads have a larger pitch (fewer threads per inch), making them easier to assemble and more resistant to damage. They are commonly used in general-purpose applications.
UNF (Unified National Fine)
UNF threads have more threads per inch, providing better clamping force and resistance to vibration. They are often used in automotive and precision applications.
UNEF (Unified National Extra Fine)
UNEF threads offer even finer threading for specialised applications requiring precise adjustment and tight fastening control.
Engineer Tip
Imperial and metric threads are not cross compatible. Never mix the two — doing so can strip threads, cause joint failure and create a serious safety risk.
Unified Threads vs Metric Threads
Unified (Imperial)
- Measured in inches
- Defined by threads per inch (TPI)
- Common in US and imported equipment
- Examples: 1/4"-20 UNC, 3/8"-24 UNF
Metric Threads
- Measured in millimetres
- Defined by thread pitch (distance between threads)
- Common across the UK and Europe
- Examples: M6 x 1.0, M10 x 1.5
It is important not to mix unified and metric threads, as they are not compatible and can damage both fasteners and components.
Imperial Thread Conversion Chart
Common UNC thread sizes with their metric equivalents.
| Imperial Thread | Diameter (inch) | Diameter (mm) | Closest Metric Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| #4-40 UNC | 0.112" | 2.84mm | M3 |
| #6-32 UNC | 0.138" | 3.51mm | M3.5 |
| #8-32 UNC | 0.164" | 4.17mm | M4 |
| #10-24 UNC | 0.190" | 4.83mm | M5 |
| 1/4"-20 UNC | 0.250" | 6.35mm | M6 |
| 5/16"-18 UNC | 0.313" | 7.94mm | M8 |
| 3/8"-16 UNC | 0.375" | 9.53mm | M10 |
| 1/2"-13 UNC | 0.500" | 12.70mm | M12 |
UNC vs UNF Thread Pitch Comparison
Threads per inch (TPI) comparison across common sizes.
| Thread Size | UNC TPI | UNF TPI |
|---|---|---|
| #4 | 40 TPI | 48 TPI |
| #6 | 32 TPI | 40 TPI |
| #8 | 32 TPI | 36 TPI |
| #10 | 24 TPI | 32 TPI |
| 1/4" | 20 TPI | 28 TPI |
| 5/16" | 18 TPI | 24 TPI |
| 3/8" | 16 TPI | 24 TPI |
| 1/2" | 13 TPI | 20 TPI |
Imperial Thread TPI & Pitch Reference
UNC and UNF threads per inch with equivalent metric pitch for every common size.
| Thread Size | UNC TPI | UNC Pitch (mm) | UNF TPI | UNF Pitch (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #4 | 40 TPI | 0.64mm | 48 TPI | 0.53mm |
| #6 | 32 TPI | 0.79mm | 40 TPI | 0.64mm |
| #8 | 32 TPI | 0.79mm | 36 TPI | 0.71mm |
| #10 | 24 TPI | 1.06mm | 32 TPI | 0.79mm |
| 1/4" | 20 TPI | 1.27mm | 28 TPI | 0.91mm |
| 5/16" | 18 TPI | 1.41mm | 24 TPI | 1.06mm |
| 3/8" | 16 TPI | 1.59mm | 24 TPI | 1.06mm |
| 1/2" | 13 TPI | 1.95mm | 20 TPI | 1.27mm |
| 5/8" | 11 TPI | 2.31mm | 18 TPI | 1.41mm |
| 3/4" | 10 TPI | 2.54mm | 16 TPI | 1.59mm |
How to read this table: UNC has fewer threads per inch (coarser pitch). UNF has more threads per inch (finer pitch). A lower pitch value in mm means threads are closer together.
Which Thread Standard Should I Use?
Match your application to the right thread type.
| Thread Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| UNC | General engineering — easy assembly, good resistance to damage, widely available |
| UNF | High vibration applications — better clamping force, reduced loosening over time |
| Metric Coarse | General European engineering — the UK and EU standard for most fastening applications |
| Metric Fine | Automotive and precision engineering — tighter thread engagement for critical assemblies |
Imperial Fastener Spanner Guide
Typical spanner sizes for UNC thread fasteners.
| Thread Size | Typical Spanner Size |
|---|---|
| 1/4 UNC | 7/16" AF |
| 5/16 UNC | 1/2" AF |
| 3/8 UNC | 9/16" AF |
| 1/2 UNC | 3/4" AF |
Key Features and Benefits
- Standardised across US and international industries
- Wide range of sizes and thread types available
- Suitable for high strength and precision applications
- Reliable performance in mechanical assemblies
- Commonly used in automotive, aerospace and machinery
Common UK Use Cases
- Maintenance of imported US machinery
- Automotive repairs and restoration
- Engineering and manufacturing applications
- Aerospace and specialist industries
- Replacement fasteners for imperial systems
How to Identify Unified Threads
Unified threads are typically marked using a format such as 1/4"-20 UNC, where 1/4" represents the diameter and 20 represents the number of threads per inch. Measuring with a thread gauge or comparing against known fasteners is the best way to confirm sizing.
Industries Using Unified Threads

Classic Vehicle Restoration
American and imported classic vehicles use imperial threads throughout. Unified fasteners are essential for authentic restorations and mechanical repairs on vintage US cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Imported Industrial Machinery
US-manufactured plant and equipment is built entirely to imperial specifications. Maintenance engineers in the UK regularly require UNC and UNF fasteners to service imported machinery.

Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace applications often specify UNF threads for their superior vibration resistance and clamping force. Many international aircraft components still use imperial thread standards.

Agricultural Equipment
Many tractors, combines and imported farming machinery use imperial fasteners. UNC threads are commonly specified across agricultural equipment manufactured in North America.

Marine Engineering
Boats and marine equipment from North American manufacturers commonly use UNC and UNF threads. Stainless steel imperial fasteners are widely used in saltwater marine applications.

Imported Industrial Equipment
Packaging lines, CNC machinery and industrial equipment imported from the US and Canada frequently require imperial replacement fasteners. Vital Parts stocks a wide range for maintenance needs.
