Complete Guide to Grub Screws
Grub Screws Guide
What they are, what they do and how to choose the right point style.
What are Grub Screws?
Grub screws, also known as set screws, are a type of fastener manufactured without a protruding head and are generally entirely threaded. This means the screw can be fastened into a pre-tapped fixing hole, sitting flush within the space without being obtrusive to the surrounding area.
Grub screws are available with varying driver styles to suit different applications and can be supplied in high performance stainless steel grades.
What are Grub Screws used for?
Grub screws are commonly used where space is limited or where a smooth finish without protrusion is required. Typical uses include door locking mechanisms, joining objects together to create a rigid structure, kitchen and bathroom fixings, and engineering or automotive applications. They are ideal for applications that require a flush, discreet finish, as they do not need a nut to secure them into place.

How to remove a lodged grub screw
If a grub screw becomes lodged in the fixing hole and the drive has been worn, corroded or damaged, try the steps below to resolve the issue.
First steps
- Apply a lubricant: helps to loosen rust and corrosion from the screw.
- Use the corresponding drive type: ensure the driver seats fully, then turn anti-clockwise.
- Try a slight tighten first: a small clockwise turn can break the corrosion seal, then loosen anti-clockwise.
If it still will not move
- Use an awl or centre punch and a hammer.
- Make a small indentation in the centre of the grub screw as a drill guide point.
- Select an appropriate drill bit and drill into the grub screw.
- Insert a suitable screw extractor and secure it with gentle taps.
- Turn the extractor anti-clockwise using a tap and die handle for added torque.
