Junction Boxes Guide
Electrical Junction Boxes:
Types, IP Ratings & Applications
Electrical junction boxes provide a secure and practical enclosure for housing electrical connections, protecting wiring and organising cable entry points.
An electrical junction box, sometimes referred to as a J-box, provides a protected enclosure.
Designed for domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations, these enclosures help protect internal wiring from accidental contact, mechanical damage, dust and moisture.
Available in a selection of sizes and configurations, our range includes general electrical enclosures, outdoor and waterproof junction boxes, lighting junction boxes and WISKA junction boxes, including the popular WISKA 407 Combi Box. These enclosures can be used for lighting circuits, electrical equipment, control panels and general cable management applications.
View Junction Boxes →What Is an Electrical Junction Box?
An electrical junction box is an enclosure used to contain and protect electrical wiring connections. It provides a defined location for joining, extending or distributing wiring while helping protect the connections from accidental contact and external conditions.
We supply junction boxes for a variety of installation requirements including indoor electrical connections and outdoor applications where additional environmental protection is required. Depending on the individual enclosure, options include multiple cable entry points, removable covers and different IP protection ratings.

Types of Electrical Junction Boxes
Different electrical installations require different enclosure sizes, cable entry arrangements and levels of protection. Our range provides options for a variety of wiring and equipment applications.
Outdoor Junction Boxes & Weatherproof Electrical Enclosures
An outdoor electrical junction box provides a protective enclosure for wiring connections installed in exposed or demanding environments. These boxes are commonly used for external lighting, building services, industrial equipment and outdoor electrical installations where moisture and environmental exposure must be considered.
When selecting an outdoor junction box, it is important to consider the required IP rating, enclosure material, cable entry arrangement and operating conditions.
A weatherproof junction box should provide an appropriate level of protection for the intended installation, with suitable cable glands and correctly fitted covers helping maintain the enclosure's specified ingress protection.
IP-Rated Junction Boxes for Dust & Water Protection
IP-rated junction boxes are designed to provide defined levels of protection against the ingress of solid objects and water. The required rating depends on the installation environment and the degree of exposure to dust, moisture or water.
| IP Rating | Protection | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| IP65 | Dust-tight with protection against water jets | Appropriately specified indoor and outdoor applications |
| IP66 | Dust-tight with protection against powerful water jets | More demanding environments requiring increased water protection |
| IP67 | Dust-tight with resistance to temporary immersion under specified test conditions | Applications where temporary water immersion may need to be considered |
| IP68 | Designed for continuous immersion under manufacturer-specified conditions | Installations where the individual enclosure carries the appropriate IP68 rating |
Not all junction boxes are available in every IP rating. Always check the selected enclosure's technical specifications and ensure the complete installation maintains the required protection level.
Need an enclosure for a demanding environment? Explore our IP-rated electrical junction boxes for options designed for professional electrical installations.
Electrical Junction Boxes for Wiring & Lighting
Electrical wiring junction boxes provide a central enclosure for joining, extending or distributing electrical connections. They are commonly used in lighting installations, building services and equipment wiring where connections need to be contained within a suitable protective housing.
A lighting junction box can accommodate compatible terminal blocks, lever connectors or other approved electrical connection methods, depending on the available internal space and installation requirements.
These enclosures help keep electrical connections organised while allowing suitable access for inspection and maintenance.
For applications requiring electrical wire connectors, always select components with the appropriate current rating, conductor compatibility and installation requirements. The junction box itself does not determine the electrical rating of the complete connection.

Protective Enclosures
Provide protection for electrical wiring and cable connections.
Multiple Sizes
Available in different enclosure sizes and cable entry configurations.
Versatile Applications
Suitable for domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations.
IP-Rated Options
Options available for applications requiring dust and water protection.
Organised Wiring
Help organise internal wiring and electrical connection points.
Accessory Compatibility
Compatible with suitable cable glands and electrical connectors.
Maintenance Access
Removable covers on selected designs allow access for maintenance.
Industrial Use
Suitable for lighting systems, machinery and electrical control equipment.
What Size Junction Box do I Need?
Junction box size should be selected according to the number and size of cables, connectors, terminals and accessories housed inside the enclosure. Allow sufficient internal space for safe cable routing and future maintenance rather than selecting an enclosure based solely on external dimensions.
Number of Cables
Allow room for every cable entering and leaving the enclosure.
Cable Diameter
Larger cables require more room for entry, routing and suitable bend radius.
Connectors and Terminals
Account for the space required by terminal blocks, connectors and other internal accessories.
Space for Maintenance
Leave enough internal clearance for inspection, routing and future maintenance.
Common Applications for Junction Boxes
Junction boxes are used throughout the electrical industry to protect connections and provide suitable enclosures for different wiring arrangements.
| Application | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Domestic Electrical Installations | Housing suitable wiring connections and electrical junctions within buildings. |
| Outdoor Lighting | Protecting electrical connections associated with garden lighting, security lights and external installations. |
| Industrial Machinery | Enclosing electrical terminals and cable connections within manufacturing equipment. |
| Automation & Control Systems | Organising wiring connections in industrial control equipment and automation installations. |
| Commercial Buildings | Providing electrical connection enclosures for lighting, building services and equipment. |
| HVAC Equipment | Protecting suitable electrical connections associated with ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems. |

How to Choose the Correct Junction Box
Consider the number of cables, enclosure dimensions, cable entry requirements and installation environment before selecting a junction box.
Check Internal Space
Ensure there is sufficient room for the intended connectors and wiring without excessive crowding.
Check Cable Entries
Select a suitable cable entry configuration that allows cables to enter without excessive bending or strain.
Confirm the IP Rating
For exposed installations, confirm that the selected enclosure provides the required level of dust and water protection.
Select Compatible Accessories
Use suitable cable glands, seals and mounting accessories to help maintain the required enclosure protection.
Consider Maintenance
Where connections must remain accessible, consider enclosure location, cover access and the installation method.
Any maintenance-free connection arrangement must meet the applicable requirements of BS 7671 and the connector manufacturer's instructions.
Explore Our Junction Box Range
Browse junction boxes in different sizes, configurations and colour options for electrical installation requirements.

Important Information About Junction Box Contents
Our junction boxes are supplied as empty electrical enclosures unless otherwise stated. Terminal blocks, lever connectors, electrical wire connectors and other internal connection components are not included as standard and should be selected separately to suit the installation.
Always ensure that the selected electrical connectors, cable glands and other accessories are compatible with the enclosure and the requirements of the complete electrical installation.
