Galvanised Steel Fasteners: Engineering Guide
Galvanised Steel Fasteners Explained
Galvanised steel fasteners are widely used across UK construction, infrastructure, agriculture and outdoor engineering because they combine dependable mechanical strength with practical corrosion protection.
This guide explains how hot-dip galvanising works, where galvanised fixings perform best, which environments need an alternative material and which galvanised products are available from Vital Parts.
Common Uses
- Structural steelwork
- Fencing and railings
- Highway infrastructure
- Agricultural equipment
- Outdoor timber construction
What Is Galvanised Steel?
Galvanised steel is carbon steel protected by a zinc coating. During hot-dip galvanising, prepared steel is immersed in molten zinc at approximately 450°C, creating a metallurgically bonded coating across the exposed surfaces.
The zinc acts as both a physical barrier and a sacrificial layer. It corrodes before the underlying steel and can continue protecting small exposed areas if the surface is lightly scratched.
This combination makes galvanised fixings a practical alternative to untreated or lightly plated steel for external construction, infrastructure and general engineering work.
Protective Zinc Coating
The zinc layer helps isolate the base steel from moisture and oxygen while providing sacrificial protection around minor scratches and exposed edges.
Fastener Finish and Material Comparison
Compare common fastener finishes before choosing a material for indoor, outdoor or highly corrosive applications.
| Finish | Corrosion Resistance | Indoor | Outdoor | Typical Uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanised Steel | ★★★★☆ | ✓ | ✓ | Construction, fencing and infrastructure |
| Zinc Plated Steel | ★★☆☆☆ | ✓ | Limited | Indoor fasteners and sheltered assemblies |
| A2 Stainless Steel | ★★★★☆ | ✓ | ✓ | General outdoor, architectural and food equipment |
| A4 Stainless Steel | ★★★★★ | ✓ | ✓ | Coastal, marine and chemical environments |
| Nylon | Non-corroding material | ✓ | Application dependent | Electrical, lightweight and non-metallic assemblies |
Selection note: Corrosion resistance also depends on coating thickness, local exposure, drainage, maintenance and contact with other materials.
Galvanised vs Zinc Plated Fasteners: Coating Thickness & Standards
Compare typical coating thicknesses, relevant standards and general uses for common zinc-based fastener finishes.
| Finish | Typical Coating | Relevant Standard | General Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zinc Electroplated | 5–12 µm | EN ISO 4042 | Indoor / relatively dry environments |
| Sherardised | 15–30 µm | EN ISO 17668 | Enhanced corrosion protection |
| Hot-Dip Galvanised Fasteners | 50 µm min. | EN ISO 10684 | Outdoor / exposed applications |

THREE KEY PROTECTION
MECHANISMS
BARRIER PROTECTION
The zinc coating forms a durable barrier that protects the steel from moisture, oxygen and other corrosive elements.
SACRIFICIAL PROTECTION
Zinc is more reactive than steel, so it will corrode preferentially, protecting the underlying steel even if the coating is scratched or damaged.
METALLURGICAL BOND
The zinc and iron form a series of metallurgically bonded alloy layers, creating an exceptionally durable and tough coating that resists abrasion and impact.
Coating Thickness for Galvanised Fasteners
Hot-dip galvanised threaded fasteners manufactured to EN ISO 10684 have a substantially thicker zinc coating than typical zinc electroplated fasteners. According to the Galvanizers Association, the minimum average coating thickness for hot-dip galvanised fasteners is 50 µm, compared with a typical 5–12 µm for zinc electroplating.
Galvanising Standards for Fasteners
When specifying hot-dip galvanised fasteners, the applicable standard is EN ISO 10684 – Fasteners – Hot dip galvanised coatings.
For fabricated iron and steel articles, hot-dip galvanised coatings are generally covered by EN ISO 1461.
How the Hot-Dip Galvanising Process Works
The full industrial process contains several preparation and inspection stages. The six-stage overview below is more closely focused on the treatment of hot-dip galvanised fasteners.
Degreasing & Cleaning
Oils, grease, dirt and other surface contamination are removed before chemical surface preparation begins.
Pickling
The steel is chemically cleaned to remove rust, mill scale and oxide layers before galvanising.
Fluxing
Flux treatment removes remaining oxide traces, helps prevent re-oxidation and prepares the clean steel for immersion.
Molten Zinc Bath
The clean steel is immersed in molten zinc at approximately 450°C, forming metallurgically bonded zinc-iron alloy layers.
Centrifuging / Spinning
Fasteners and other small components are spun after leaving the zinc bath to remove surplus zinc and reduce excessive coating build-up around threads.
Cooling & Inspection
The metallurgically bonded zinc coating cools before the finished fasteners and threaded areas are checked.
Process result: The reaction between iron and zinc forms zinc-iron alloy layers with an outer zinc coating rather than a simple painted surface film. Centrifuging is particularly relevant to small threaded fasteners because it helps remove surplus zinc from the component.
Benefits of Galvanised Steel Fasteners
Each benefit contributes to lower maintenance demands and more dependable performance in exposed applications.
Long Service Life
Galvanised steel fasteners feature a sacrificial zinc coating that corrodes before the underlying steel, significantly extending service life in outdoor and exposed environments.
Excellent Corrosion Protection
Unlike untreated steel, galvanised components continue protecting the base material around small scratches because nearby zinc acts sacrificially.
Cost-Effective Protection
Compared with stainless steel, galvanised fixings often provide sufficient corrosion resistance at a lower purchase cost for many construction and infrastructure projects.
Reduced Maintenance
A factory-applied zinc coating requires no regular repainting in many applications, helping reduce inspection, repair and access costs over the life of the assembly.
Tough Bonded Finish
The zinc-iron alloy layers are metallurgically bonded to the steel, producing a robust coating that tolerates transport, assembly and normal site handling.
Broad Application Range
Galvanised bolts, nuts, washers and timber fixings are used across structural steel, fencing, agriculture, highways, bridges and outdoor machinery.
How Long Does Galvanised Steel Last?
Indicative planning ranges for atmospheric exposure. Actual performance must be assessed for the specific coating and location.
| Environment | Indicative Time to First Maintenance | Main Influences |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor or Enclosed | 50+ years | Humidity, condensation and chemical exposure |
| Rural | 35-75+ years | Rainfall, sheltering and coating thickness |
| Urban or Industrial | 20-50+ years | Pollution, moisture and surface contamination |
| Coastal or Salt-Laden | Site-specific assessment required | Distance from shore, salt spray, prevailing wind and drainage |
Important: These figures are broad guidance rather than a product warranty. Direct marine splash, chemical immersion, contact with treated timber and aggressive microclimates require specialist assessment. A duplex paint or powder coating system may extend protection in severe environments.
Common Applications for Galvanised Fasteners
Alternating application panels show how galvanised fixings are used across exposed structures and equipment.

Structural Steel
Hot-dip galvanised bolts, nuts and washers are used to assemble brackets, frames, supports and steel structures exposed to the weather. The coating provides a practical balance of strength, service life and project cost.

Agricultural Equipment
Farm machinery, gates, livestock equipment and storage structures are frequently exposed to rain, mud and fertiliser contamination. Galvanised fixings provide durable fastening for repair and new-build agricultural assemblies.

Highway Infrastructure
Roadside signs, barriers, access covers and public infrastructure require weather-resistant fixings that can withstand vibration and long-term exposure. Security variants can also help reduce unauthorised removal.

Bridges and Walkways
Galvanised fixings are used across bridge furniture, handrails, service platforms and structural accessories. Large outside diameter washers can spread load over fabricated or timber surfaces.

Gates and Railings
Outdoor gates, railings, barriers and perimeter security products need fixings that resist weathering. Galvanised security nuts and bolts can combine corrosion protection with tamper resistance.

Timber Construction
Galvanised coach screws are commonly used for fencing, gates, sleepers, joists and landscaping structures. Suitable washers should be added to spread load and reduce head embedment in timber.

Trailers and Transport Equipment
Trailer frames, brackets, ramps and accessories are exposed to road spray and changing weather. Galvanised fasteners are a cost-effective option for serviceable connections outside direct marine conditions.

Outdoor Machinery
Plant frames, guards, brackets and adjustable supports need fixings that tolerate moisture and routine maintenance. Galvanised steel provides practical protection for general outdoor machinery installations.
When Should You NOT Use Galvanised Fasteners?
Although galvanised steel offers excellent corrosion protection for many outdoor applications, it is not suitable for every operating environment.
Avoid or carefully assess galvanised fasteners for:
- Direct marine splash or prolonged saltwater exposure
- Food processing areas requiring hygienic stainless surfaces
- Highly acidic environments
- Continuous or aggressive chemical exposure
- Applications requiring electrical insulation or a non-metallic fixing
Consider These Alternatives
A2 Stainless Steel
Suitable for general outdoor, architectural and many food equipment applications away from strong chloride exposure.
A4 Stainless Steel
Preferred for coastal, marine, washdown and higher-chloride environments where improved resistance is required.
Nylon
Useful where low weight, electrical insulation and non-metallic construction matter more than high mechanical load.
