Coach Screws

Our Coach Screws, also known as Lag Bolts or Hex Wood Screws, are manufactured to DIN 571 from A2 or A4 Stainless Steel. These screws are fastened with the use of a spanner or socket drive to match the corresponding across flats value of the Hexagon Head. The hexagon shape head makes it easy to grip with bolt from multiple angles using different tools.

What are Coach Screws used for?

Coach Screws are used as heavy-duty fasteners to fix timber, metal or concrete to timber. Coach screws have a pointed tip designed to make it easy to start screwing into timber. These screws are commonly used in roofing, decking and other timber joinery applications.

Should I use a washer with a coach screw?

While washers aren't strictly necessary with coach screws, they can offer several benefits:

  • Increased load-bearing capacity: A washer distributes the load over a larger area, reducing the risk of the screw head pulling through the material.
  • Improved sealing: Washers can help to create a tighter seal between the screw head and the material, preventing water ingress and corrosion.
  • Enhanced aesthetics: Washers can provide a cleaner, more finished look to your project.

However, it's important to choose the right type of washer. A flat washer is typically sufficient for most applications. If you're concerned about the screw head pulling through the material, you may want to consider using a larger diameter washer or a spring washer.

How do you use a Coach Screws?

It is recommended that a pilot hole 2mm smaller than the screw size is drilled when using a Coach Screw with any type of wood.

Are stainless steel coach screws suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, stainless steel coach screws are excellent for outdoor applications. Stainless steel offers superior resistance to corrosion. It is ideal for environments exposed to moisture, rain, and harsh weather conditions. This durability ensures the longevity of the joints in your outdoor projects, whether it's a garden shed, a deck, or a fence.
