Coach Screws DIN 571

Our Coach Screws, also known as Lag Bolts or Hex Wood Screws, are manufactured to DIN 571 from A2 or A4 Stainless Steel. These stainless steel coach screws are fastened with the use of a spanner or socket drive to match the corresponding across flats value of the hexagon head. The hexagon shape makes them easy to tighten from multiple angles using different tools, making them a reliable choice for heavy-duty timber fixing applications. Available in a wide range of sizes, our stainless coach screws are suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.

What are Coach Screws used for?

Coach Screws are heavy-duty fasteners designed to secure timber to timber, timber to masonry and timber to metal. Their pointed thread allows them to bite into wood with ease, making them ideal for decking, fencing, roofing, landscaping and structural timber work. We stock everything from smaller sizes through to larger 100mm coach screws, 200mm coach screws and 400mm coach screws, ensuring there is a suitable fixing for almost any project.

Should I use a washer with a Coach Screw?

Whilst washers are not always essential when installing Coach Screws, they can provide several advantages:

  • Increased load-bearing capacity: A washer spreads the load across a larger surface area, reducing the risk of the screw head pulling into the timber.
  • Improved sealing: Washers help create a tighter seal beneath the head, reducing the likelihood of moisture entering the fixing point.
  • Enhanced appearance: A washer provides a cleaner, more professional finish to the installation.

It is important to select a washer that matches the size of your Coach Screw. A standard flat washer is suitable for most applications, whilst larger diameter washers can provide additional support where higher loads are expected.

How do you use Coach Screws?

It is recommended that a pilot hole approximately 2mm smaller than the screw diameter is drilled before installing a Coach Screw into timber. This helps reduce the driving force required whilst minimising the risk of splitting the wood. Popular sizes such as the M8 coach screw, 100mm coach screws, M12 coach screws and larger 200mm coach screws are commonly used for structural timber, landscaping, fencing and heavy-duty construction projects.

Are stainless steel Coach Screws suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. Stainless steel coach screws are an excellent choice for outdoor applications thanks to their outstanding corrosion resistance. Available in both A2 and marine-grade A4 Stainless Steel, these coach screws stainless options are ideal for decking, fencing, garden structures, coastal environments and external timber construction where long-term durability is essential.
