Dome Nuts, also known as Acorn Nuts or Cap Nuts, are a type of nut which have a rounded head and are only open on one end. This means when fastened the thread is concealed. Dome Nuts come in a few different styles depending on the application. They are commonly used to hide or protect the thread, but can only cover a limited length of thread.
Our customers have frequently found it useful to combine Domed Nuts with Form A Flat Washers and Half Hex Nuts. When a larger length of thread is requried to be covered, a Thread Protection Nut Cap can be combined with a Hex Nut providing protection to the otherwise exposed threads from dirt, damage, corrosion or injury.
Dome Nuts are nuts are available in A2 Stainless Steel (304 Equivalent) and A4 Stainless Steel (316 Equivalent), in sizes from M3 to M36.
A Dome Nut can be used over a standard hex nut when an aesthetic finish is required. Dome and Cap Nuts hide the thread, which can be important during some assemblies where appearance matters, such are automotive or furniture. Hiding the thread also has the benefit of being safer than a standard nut by reducing the risk of cuts or scratches. Dome Nuts will also protect the thread from external damage from dirt, moisture and physical impact. For Sanitary applications in food assembly lines or wash down rooms a Hygienic Cap Nuts can be used, which come with a rubber seal and have a smooth self draining design.
Cap Nuts can be refered to as Capped Nuts, Acorn Nuts, Dome Nuts, Crown Nuts or Blind Nuts. However, these names can also refer to different types of nuts. For example, a Dome or Acorn Nut commonly refers to a DIN 1587 Nut, as this closely resembles an Acorn. A Cap Nut often refers to a DIN 917 Nut, and is size and shape to a standard Hex Nut with one end capped. A Crown Nut can refer to both a DIN 1587 Dome Nut and a DIN 985 Castle Nut, as they both resemble the crowns of chess pieces, however a Castle Nut is not a type of Cap Nut.
