Phillips Screws Guide: Head Types, PH Sizes & Driver Chart
Phillips Screws Explained: Types, Uses and Benefits
Phillips screws are one of the most commonly used fasteners across a wide range of industries. Recognised by their cross-shaped drive, they are designed for improved torque control and reduced cam-out, making them ideal for both manual and powered installation.
What are Phillips screws?
Phillips screws are fasteners that feature a cross-shaped recess in the head, designed to work with a matching Phillips screwdriver or bit. This design helps centre the tool during installation and allows for controlled torque application.
Why use Phillips screws?
Compared to slotted screws, Phillips screws offer improved grip between the tool and fastener, reducing slipping during installation. They are widely used in general manufacturing, electronics, construction and maintenance applications.
Benefits of Phillips screws
- Cross-head design helps centre the screwdriver during use
- Reduces slipping and improves installation efficiency
- Compatible with both manual and power tools
- Available in multiple head styles for different applications
- Suitable for a wide range of industries and uses
Phillips screws are designed to improve torque control and reduce cam-out during installation.
Types of Phillips Screws
Phillips vs Pozidriv Screws
Understanding the difference between these two cross-head drive types.
| Phillips | Pozidriv |
|---|---|
| Cross-shaped recess | Cross with additional ribs between the arms |
| Intentionally designed to cam out at high torque | Higher torque before cam-out |
| Common in electronics and consumer products | Common in construction and heavy-duty applications |
| Better for controlled tightening | Better for heavy-duty fastening with power tools |
Engineer Tip — Why Phillips Screws Cam Out
The Phillips drive was intentionally designed to allow the screwdriver to slip once sufficient torque is reached. This prevents overtightening and damage to the fastener or material. Many people assume cam-out is a flaw — it is actually a design feature built in from the start.
Phillips Drive Size Guide
Common Phillips drive sizes and their typical screw applications.
| Phillips Drive | Typical Screw Sizes |
|---|---|
| PH000 | Small electronics |
| PH00 | Precision equipment |
| PH0 | Small machine screws |
| PH1 | General purpose |
| PH2 | Most common — covers the majority of standard fasteners |
| PH3 | Large fasteners |
| PH4 | Heavy industrial |
Which Phillips Screwdriver Do I Need?
Match your screw to the correct driver size to avoid cam-out and damage.
| Screw | Recommended Driver |
|---|---|
| M2 Countersunk | PH0 |
| M3 Machine Screw | PH1 |
| M5 Machine Screw | PH2 |
| Large Woodscrews | PH3 |
Common Applications

Electronics & Small Devices
Phillips screws are the go-to fastener for circuit boards, casings and consumer electronics where small screw sizes and precise torque control are essential.

Automotive
Widely used in vehicle interiors, dashboards and trim panels. Phillips screws allow fast assembly on production lines and are compatible with powered tooling.

Domestic Appliances & Shelving
From washing machines to wall-mounted shelving, Phillips screws are found throughout the home. Their ease of use makes them popular for both factory assembly and DIY installation.

Furniture Manufacturing
Countersunk Phillips screws are a staple in furniture production, providing flush fixings in wood, MDF and chipboard without requiring specialist tools.

Industrial Machinery
Machine screws with Phillips heads are used extensively in industrial equipment assembly, enclosures and panel fixings where repeated access is required.
HVAC Equipment
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems rely heavily on Phillips screws for casing fixings, ductwork and access panel fastening throughout installation and maintenance.

Consumer Products
Toys, sporting goods, power tools and household products are assembled using Phillips screws at scale, thanks to their compatibility with automated and semi-automated fastening systems.
Available Materials
Phillips screws are available in a range of materials to suit different environments and applications.
A2 Stainless Steel
Good general corrosion resistance. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use in standard environments.
Bright Zinc Plated (BZP)
Steel with a zinc coating for light corrosion protection. The most common finish for general indoor applications.
Nylon
Non-conductive, lightweight and corrosion-proof. Ideal for electronics, food processing and chemical environments.
Where are Phillips screws commonly used?
- General manufacturing and assembly
- Electronics and small devices
- Construction and joinery
- Maintenance and repair work
- DIY and household projects
Phillips screws are a versatile fastening solution suitable for a wide range of materials and applications, offering ease of use and reliable performance across industries.
Phillips Screw Head Types
Choosing the right head type depends on your finish requirements and application.
| Head Type | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Countersunk | Flush finish |
| Pan Head | General assembly |
| Raised Countersunk | Decorative finish |
| Cheese Head | Machinery |
| Truss Head | Thin materials |
Common Mistakes When Using Phillips Screws
Using the Wrong Size Drive
Always match the PH size to the screw. An incorrect driver will cam out immediately and strip the recess, making removal difficult.
Using a Worn Screwdriver
Worn or damaged screwdriver tips reduce grip in the recess and significantly increase the risk of cam-out and screw head damage.
Confusing Phillips and Pozidriv
These drives look similar but are not interchangeable. Using a Pozidriv bit on a Phillips screw will cause slipping and damage to the head.
Over-Tightening
Applying excessive torque will strip the screw head or damage the material. Phillips drives cam out by design — trust the mechanism.
Reusing Damaged Screws
A screw with a stripped or deformed recess should never be reused. Attempting to drive a damaged screw risks making removal impossible.
Industries Using Phillips Screws

Construction
Phillips screws are used extensively in construction for fixing plasterboard, timber frames, cladding and access panels where fast, reliable fixing is essential.

Electronics
From PCB casings to consumer devices, Phillips screws in small sizes (PH000–PH1) are the standard choice in the electronics industry worldwide.

Automotive
Interior trim, dashboard panels and body components in vehicles are commonly fastened with Phillips screws for ease of assembly and serviceability.

Furniture Manufacturing
Countersunk Phillips screws provide flush, clean fixings across wood, MDF and chipboard — making them the industry standard for furniture production.

White Goods
Washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators and other domestic appliances use Phillips screws for panel fixings and internal component assembly.

DIY & Home Improvement
Phillips screws are the most widely recognised fastener for DIY projects. Their ease of use with both manual and cordless tools makes them ideal for home improvements of all kinds.
Also Known As
Installation Guide
Follow these steps for a clean, secure fix every time.
Choose the Correct PH Size
Match the driver size to your screw. PH2 covers most standard applications.
Keep the Driver Perpendicular
Hold the driver at 90° to the screw head to maximise contact and reduce cam-out risk.
Apply Firm Downward Pressure
Push firmly into the recess as you turn. Pressure prevents the driver from riding out of the head.
Tighten Until Secure
Stop when the screw is snug. If you feel cam-out starting, the correct torque has been reached.
