Yes, parts can be masked during powder coating to prevent coating from building up on threads, holes or critical surfaces. Silicone caps and plugs are commonly used to protect threads and openings, as they withstand high curing temperatures and create a clean, reusable barrier against powder.

Before powder coating a bike frame, mask any threaded, bearing or precision fit areas to prevent coating build-up.

Common areas to mask include:

-Bottom bracket threads

-Head tube bearing seats

-Seat tube (inside)

-Dropout faces

-Disc brake mount faces

-Bottle cage threads

-Cable guide threads

-Axle mounting points

Silicone caps and high-temperature plugs are ideal for protecting threaded holes, while high-temperature masking tape can be used for flat mounting faces.
